Diandra, what a classy and classic article. Your points are excellent and well stated. NASCAR seems to want to miss the basic point that the vast majority of fans aren't stupid and don't believe something simply because a driver says it. Unfortunately, NASCAR's management and talking heads seem to that sweeping all negative comments under the rug will fix the underlying problem of why fans aren't coming to the track or watching on TV.

NASCAR has done a lot of the damage to itself with its management decisions. This fining the drivers seems more like a "sour grapes" reaction. How about listening to their issues? Hamlin and Newman didn't say anything that the fans haven't already been talking about themselves. One of the talking heads for NASCAR said that they were in the business of "manufacturing excitement". Really? I thought they were supposed to be the sanctioning body for a SPORT.

I go to and tune into races to watch MY favorite driver and see a sporting event. If that isn't what I'm seeing, then I can find another way to spend my money and my time.

What wonderful word play: Speech Limit, my chuckle of the day.
Apparently NASCAR only has room for company stooges, pumping up the rubes to help them lose weight, or at least help them shed a little coin of the realm.
However, the fans apparently are able to see through the ruse as 17 of the first 20 races this season have dramatically lower TV ratings, and 9 of the 20 just posted their lowest ratings,...ever in the history of that track, including Indy and they Daytona 500.
NASCAR has a serious problem, but the emeror thinks his new clothes are just grand, and so he shall wear them,.... and give Indy Racing and ALMS a real opportunity to create a new fan base.

While other sports fine their athletes for disparaging comments, at least we know who the player is and the amount of the fine. Nascar's underhanded secrecy is so transparent that it's laughable. Ramsey Poston's blog was so totally out of whack, that I had to chuckle at the stupidity. A driver's comment or even if 15 drivers have negative comments, does not destroy the brand. If Nascar wants to fine someone for harming Nascar, I suggest they look directly at the two biggest names in the sport----Brian France and Mike Helton. Those two have done everything to destroy Nascar, but they refuse to admit it. The drivers did not think up the sorry excuse of the Chase. The drivers did not develop the awful to race, IROC-type, COT. The drivers don't set the schedule of boring cookie-cutter tracks. Those belong entirely to France and Helton. If there's anyone else they can fine for destroying the fan base, look directly to track owners/promoters. The fans don't establish insane ticket prices, parking fees or concession prices. Add to this the out of line price increases that the hotels slap on fans, and you have a sport that dying of it's own accord, at the hands of the people who run the sport. It's not the drivers, stupid. It's the guys who run the sport that are destroying it.

The method of secret censorship is insulting to my self (getting closer to being an X- Fan all the time) & has to be so UN American & AGAINST all that was Nascar when I started watching. (mid 70's) Don't think I care for the new secret Nascar.
