Teacher Academies

Building SPEED materials are disseminated through Teacher Academies, which are hosted by a college or university and held near race tracks. Up to 40 math, physics and/or physical science teachers will be selected to attend each academy through a formal application and selection process. Preference will be given to schools that send a team consisting of one math and one science teacher and that exhibit a strong committment to using the materials in the classroom during the upcoming year. Academy formats vary according to local need, but are generally one to one-and-a-half days.

Academy Schedule

  • SPEED-DE, Dover, DE—Saturday, September 20th, Delaware State University campus, hosted by Delaware State University, Dover Interanational Speedway and DuPont.
  • Building SPEED in Charlotte, NCSaturday, October 11th at the Embassy Suites Charlotte-Concord/Golf Resort and Spa, hosted by The University of North Carolina–Charlotte and Discovery Place.
  • Building SPEED in DallasSaturday, November 1st at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science 9:00 a.m.–2:00-p.m., hosted by The University of Texas at Dallas and the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science.

Participation

Teachers can be self-nominated or nominated by their school districts. Applicants will be selected according to criteria that emphasize reaching a diverse group of students, committment to implementing the materials and assisting in the evaluation and dissemination, and the potential impact on the students, the teachers and the school. Each workshop has its own application instructions, which may be found on the individual workshop site.
